Stichting El Manguaré is in Nederland opgericht om fondsen te werven voor het werk van de Asociación Civil ONGD El Manguaré in Iquitos, Peru.

Problem

As mentioned previously, more than 25% of Iquitos children either do not attend school or stop before completion, resulting in an extraordinarily high illiteracy rate. The main reasons are poverty and parents who themselves are unschooled. Parents without resources often cannot see the value of education, and  send their children home to take care of their younger siblings, or out to the streets to earn some pennies.

Objective

Achieve an influx of children attending local schools:  in close cooperation with the mothers and the schools, increase the accessibility and attendance to basic education for children of poor neighborhoods.

Actions

Children found by the local social worker who are not attending school will be enrolled into the program with the consent of their parents. After which, local teachers will help them achieve the necessary level of education so they can be (re) integrated into the local school.  Because the self-confidence of these children is also often absent or weak, their teachers will also help prepare them emotionally for the integration.  Local schools will be involved in the project so they enroll children who have completed the program (sometimes in spite of their advanced age).  El Manguaré will maintain close contact with teachers to insure progress is made. When problems occur, we involve the parents to find a solution and implement it together.

  • The Back-to-School program will be conducted in classrooms provided by the local community or rented by El Manguaré.
  • A summer project so that children of poor neighborhoods can prepare for their first year of basic education, so that they are more successful at the start of their education.

Duration and Transfer

Children of the program will (re)integrate into school within 6 months of training. Once they are enrolled into school, the children will be supported by our program for a maximum of 2 years.
